Save Firemen's Field
Please help us Save Firemen’s Field to preserve the character of our hamlet and give our children a safe place to play.

Save Firemen’s Field
For our Families & for our Future

The Mission of the Coalition to Save Firemen’s Field is to:

  • Educate the public on the current multiple uses of our “Common Ground”, including the Oyster and St. Rocco Festivals, summertime overflow parking for Little League Football, the Blue Fish Tournament and the Greater Long Island Running Club triathlons;
  • Accommodate future expansion of Recreation, Sports and Waterfront Dependent activities, (or possible expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt elementary school);
  • Ensure adequate parking for Long Island Railroad commuters, including any future line electrification, bus, trolley and taxi transportation hub needs;
  • Celebrate the esthetic and environmental attributes of the site (including its magnificent view of the harbor, linkage with two public parks and adjacent fragile fresh-water springs;)
  • Work constructively for the Greater Good of the community, by gathering facts and holding open dialogue with Civic Organizations, Town Government, and Urban Planners;
  • Enhance the infrastructure of the site to maximize its beauty and safety (and to encourage Customers, Merchants and Town Employees to park here, thereby opening up “shopping lots” for the merchants);
  • Prevent creation of the Theodore Roosevelt Museum, Auditorium and Parking Garage at the site, which at the current proposed size would dominate the town and preclude the wide variety of long established uses.

"Conservation means development as much as it does protection. I recognize the right and duty of this generation to develop and use the natural resources of our land; but I do not recognize the right to waste them, or to rob, by wasteful use, the generations that come after us."
Theodore Roosevelt "The New Nationalism" speech, Osawatomie, Kansas, August 31, 1910
